Létt Lopi is another popular type of Icelandic wool yarn produced in Iceland. Like Álafoss Lopi, it is made from the wool of Icelandic sheep, known for their dual-coated fleece. However, there are some distinct differences and characteristics of Létt Lopi:

  1. Weight and Thickness: Létt Lopi is a lighter weight yarn compared to Álafoss Lopi. It is classified as an aran or worsted weight yarn, making it suitable for a broader range of garments, including lighter sweaters, scarves, hats, mittens, and more.

  2. Texture and Feel: Létt Lopi has a slightly softer feel compared to the bulkier Álafoss Lopi. It retains the rustic texture of Icelandic wool but is more versatile for various knitting projects.

  3. Gauge: Létt Lopi typically knits up at a gauge of about 18 stitches per 4 inches (10 cm) on 4.5 mm (US 7) needles, though this can vary slightly depending on the specific project and desired fabric density.

  4. Color Range: Létt Lopi is available in a wide array of colors, including natural shades and vibrant dyed hues. The variety of colors allows for creative and intricate colorwork patterns, which are a hallmark of traditional Icelandic knitting.

  5. Warmth and Durability: While lighter than Álafoss Lopi, garments made from Létt Lopi still provide excellent warmth and durability. The yarn retains the insulating and water-resistant properties of Icelandic wool, making it ideal for outdoor wear.

  6. Cultural Significance: Létt Lopi is also commonly used in traditional Icelandic lopapeysa sweaters, known for their circular yokes and distinctive patterns. The lighter weight of Létt Lopi allows for more flexibility and comfort, making these sweaters suitable for both indoor and outdoor use.

  7. Environmental Considerations: Like other Ístex products, Létt Lopi is produced with an emphasis on sustainability and environmental responsibility. The wool is sourced from local Icelandic sheep, and the production processes aim to be eco-friendly.
