Giants of the sea
Icelandic waters are home to a variety of whales, although many of them only spend the summer months there. The high productivity of the North Atlantic and the structure of the Icelandic coastal areas offer a variety of habitats, suitable for many species with different needs. The sea around Iceland is therefore an important fedding ground for many whales.
The humpback whale (Megaptera noveangliae) migrates to the shores of Iceland in the summertime after having spent the winter months in more southern locations. It is a baleen whale and is easily identified by its long white flippers and the numerous barnacles on its body. Its body is mostly dark grey or black on top and partially white underneath. The fluke has unique patterns of black and white.
Professional whale watching is now one of the highlights for many tourists visiting Iceland. Whale watching is for example offered on Faxaflói and Breiðafjörður bays, but also in Eyjafjörður and Skjálfandi bay. A whale museum is operated in the town of Húsavík in the North, providing detailed and interesting information on whales.
