Flying Frozen Valleys
The Rock Ptarmigan (lagopus muta) is a common bird in Iceland, as in most other parts of the Arctic Region. It is characterized by seasonal plumage; changing color from brown in summer to grey or speckled in autumn and white in winter. In the snow-covered Arctic hinterlands the white Ptarmigan blends perfectly into the surroundings. The only time it blows its cover is when it spreads its wings, revealing the black tail feathers.
The Ptarmigan is cherished by most Icelanders. For some it is a precious bird to be admired and protected, but to others it is a game bird and a souree of a festive meal. The Ptarmigan is also an important figure in folklore and poetry. An example of this is a poem by the national poet Jónas Hallgrímsson, translated by Richard Ringler:
Flying frozen valleys
far from haunts of men,
settling over seree-slopes,
white with tufted feet,
not a nook of shelter,
not a shred to eat.
