About Álafoss

When Álafoss was established in 1896, it marked the true beginning of Iceland's wool industry. Today, the original factory building houses the Álafoss wool store, in the Álafosskvos in Mosfellsbær. Behind the store, you will find the beautiful Álafoss waterfall and the Varmá river, that both were used to drive the mills of the old factory.

History still resides within the walls of the old wool factory, now the Álafoss wool store, where you can explore the history of this important Icelandic industry and find a selection of old knitting machinery and photographs from the early days.

Álafoss wool store offers a great selection of authentic Icelandic wool sweaters that are hand knitted in Iceland with Icelandic wool and to ensure authenticity, all wool sweaters are marked with the knitters’ name. In addition, you can find other wool apparel and accessories, the well-known Álafoss wool blankets, Icelandic art, design and souvenirs at a fair price.
